Sweetgrass Aboriginal Head Start Initiative
“ Advocating for the education of children and their families“

What is the Sweetgrass AHS?

The Sweetgrass Aboriginal Head Start Initiative promotes early childhood strategies to Families and their Children ages 0-6 to develop a positive sense of self, a desire for learning and to provide opportunities for full potential development and success in all aspects throughout their lives.

The Sweetgrass Aboriginal Head Start Project is delivered in Flin Flon, Lynn Lake, and Sherridon.

A culturally relevant curriculum is designed and implemented that is based on the traditional teachings of Aboriginal culture, incorporating the six components of the AHS Initiative:

Nutrition…Cooking Circle. Social Support Programs…Presentations/Seminars with community agencies/services. Parental Involvement…Reading, Sewing Circle, Feast preparations.

The Flin Flon Sweetgrass Aboriginal Head Start Centre is located in the lower level of the Friendship Centre. The Sherridon Sweetgrass Aboriginal Head Start Centre is operated from the Cold Lake School. The Lynn Lake Sweetgrass Aboriginal Head Start Centre is operated from the West Lynn Heights School.
